A suspected NLF officer is summarily executed by General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, a South Vietnamese National Police Chief. Loan shoots the suspect in the head on a public street in front of journalists. The execution is both filmed and photographed (most notably by photographer Eddie Adams), and provides one of the iconic images that eventually helped sway public opinion in the United States against the war. On the other hand, ten screenwriters and directors refused to testify, arguing that the First Amendment of the U.S.
Reds in Hollywood
Through this play, Miller drew parallels between the witch hunts of the 17th century and the Red Scare of the 20th century. McCarthy’s aggressive and often unfounded accusations cast a huge doubt on his reputation across the country. Welch, in response, delivered one of the most memorable lines in American political history. In 1946, it also considered investigating the white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan, but eventually decided not to. Their decision to not pursue an investigation of the Klan prompted John E. Rankin, who was a white supremacist, to say, “After all, the KKK is an old American institution.” However, the Klan was later investigated when the committee was chaired by Edwin Willis.
Guilt by Anticipation

Subjects of HUAC investigations had the option of invoking their right to avoid self-incrimination under the Fifth Amendment, but “pleading the Fifth” created the impression that they were guilty of a crime. In addition, those who refused to cooperate were often blacklisted by their employers. They lost their jobs and were effectively prevented from working in their chosen industry. “The United States looks forward to convening leaders and stakeholders across the hemisphere to advance our shared commitment to economic prosperity, security, human rights, and dignity,” the White House said. Together with key ULI leaders and staff, the Sponsorship Committee conducts outreach to key member organizations to engage them in supporting the local ULI district council. The hearings continued for days, and prominent names called to testify guaranteed headlines. Walt Disney appeared as a friendly witness expressing fears of communism, as did actor and future president Ronald Reagan, who was serving as the president of the actor's union, the Screen Actors Guild. Despite public skirmishing between the committee and the Roosevelt administration, the Dies Committee continued its work. It eventually named more than 1,000 government workers as being suspected communists, and essentially created a template for what would occur in later years. The committee was first formed as the brainchild of a congressman from Texas, Martin Dies.
The second front on which HUAC made its mark was investigating communist infiltration of the film industry. The FBI identified both "unfriendly" witnesses who were not expected to answer the committee's questions during the televised hearings, and "friendly" witnesses who could be counted on to cooperate fully. Screen Actors Guild president Ronald Reagan, who actually had an FBI informant code designation, was among those in the latter category.
Americans for Democratic Action
I am condemning this committee for trying its cases in the newspapers and over the radio. I am condemning this committee for depriving me of right of counsel by its slanderous attacks, attacks by inference, which even repel and revolt some of the Democratic members of this committee . The term has since become synonymous with making unsubstantiated claims and public attacks on the character or patriotism of political opponents.

Some tend to view their punishment as justified, since the individuals were admitted communists, while others generally view them as heroic figures who spoke out against the abuses of the Red Scare–and in defense of the U.S. During the investigative hearings, members of HUAC grilled the witnesses about their past and present associations with the Communist Party. Aware that their answers could ruin their reputations and careers, most individuals either sought leniency by cooperating with investigators or cited their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. However, a group of 10 Hollywood screenwriters and directors took a different approach and openly challenged the legitimacy of the committee’s investigations. Seventy-five years ago, the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC for purposes of pronunciation) launched the first of its series of postwar investigations into alleged communist subversion in Hollywood.
Jeanne Mager Stellman and Steven Stellman which showed definite correlation between serious and often rare disorders and exposure to Agent Orange. In an April 17, 2003 article in the journal Nature, J. Stellman reports that the amount of highly toxic dioxin in Agent Orange was more than double the U.S. government's estimates. On April 18, an attempt is made to burn down another a Bank of America building; four students are wounded by police buckshot. Kevin Moran, a UCSB student who had attempted to disuade the crowd from using violence, is shot and killed by a Santa Barbara police officer. In early May, UC Berkeley administrators decide to reclaim the land, and on May 15, 250 Berkeley police and California Highway Patrol officers are called in to enforce this edict. As construction the fence began, a crowd of 6000 moved towards the park after rallying at nearby Sproul Plaza.

The House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) searched for communists and other suspected subversives for nearly forty years. Founded in 1938 as the House Special Committee to Investigate Un-American Activities and chaired by a conservative Texas Democrat, Martin Dies, HUAC became a standing committee of the House in 1945. In 1969 it announced a new focus, domestic terrorism, and received a new name, the House Internal Security Committee. Six years later, in the wake of Vietnam and Watergate, the full House abolished the committee. HUAC’s actions resulted in several contempt-of-Congress convictions and the blacklisting of many who refused to answer its questions. Highly controversial for its tactics, HUAC was criticized for violating First Amendment rights.
The SP won the first battle, mainly because the studios refused to bargain with the SWG. In 1936, the SWG filed papers for formal dissolution (“Screen Guild Now Dodo Officially,” gloated The Hollywood Reporter). Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Wagner Act, which obliged employers to bargain with a union duly recognized by the National Labor Relations Board.
[but] 3 days before I was supposed to come here, he called me, and he told me that his partner had just returned from out of town and had learned that he had undertaken to represent me. He said that his partner represented a bank, and that his partner felt that the attendant publicity would be so harmful to them that he insisted that they could not represent a witness before this committee. He also expressed the view – his partner did – that any attorney who represented a witness before this committee might find himself in a position where he was persecuted by other governmental agencies . A month ago I received a subpoena2 calling for my appearance before this committee.
'We must generate an interest in the students to participate actively in student affairs,' Gucovsky concluded. SLATE plans to appeal some of the ASUC[7] election rules at a judical committee meeting tomorrow. At its worst, SLATE is encouraging a break with the University which could kill student government altogether. At its best, SLATE has caused a great upswing of interest in student government.
